Proper Steps For Caring For Your 4R100 Automatic Transmission

Posted by on Wednesday, July 31st, 2013

The 4R100 is a heavy duty 4 speed automatic transmission that was optional equipment in the 1999 – 2003 Ford Super Duty trucks. It is capable of handling up to 1000 ft lbs. of torque in a stock configuration and if you know anything about automatic transmissions, you quickly realize this transmission is one beast!

Owners of these trucks generally abuse them. They add power boosters that allow the big 7.3 diesels to make much more than the 1000 ft. lbs of torque the transmission is capable of handling. Things like bigger turbo chargers, performance waste gates and nitrous all add big power to these motors.

Prepare your A500 Automatic Transmission For Off-Road Use

Posted by on Tuesday, July 30th, 2013

The Chrysler A500 is based on the original, light duty 3 speed A904 automatic transmission.  It was Chrysler’s first light duty 4-speed automatic. Chrysler took an A904 and mated an overdrive unit to the back of it. They introduced the transmission in 1989, but it was initially only used behind the small cubic inch V8 and V6 engines in light duty vans and trucks.  The transmission was eventually used in Dodge Ram pickups, Dakotas, Dodge Vans and the Jeep Grand Cherokee. The A500 transmission uses a 2.74 first gear and a 0.69 final overdrive ratio, which makes it ideal for high performance and off-road applications.

4 Reasons To Update Your 3 Speed Automatic Transmission To An Overdrive Transmission

Posted by on Friday, July 26th, 2013

The modern automatic transmission has come a long way since the first automatic transmission was introduced 80 years ago. Up through the late 1970, most domestic vehicles came with an automatic transmission that had three or less speeds. The final gear ratio was never more than one to one.  These transmissions were fine for that era, but the gas shortage of the 1970’s soon saw the government demand that car makers start manufacturing automobiles that got better mileage. Among the improvements these mandates ushered in, the overdrive automatic transmission was one of the most important.

The modern automatic transmission is a very complicated piece of hardware. While automatic transmission designs can vary from manufacturer to manufacturer, they all share one common enemy; heat! Excessive heat is by far the automatic transmission’s number one enemy, regardless of the number of gears it may possess.

The A243L transmission is a 4 speed automatic trans-axle made by Toyota. It was designed to be used exclusively in front wheel drive vehicles.  It was first put into production back in 1993 and remained in the Toyota lineup through the 1993 model year. Oddly enough, Toyota built this transmission to fit one specific model vehicle; the Celica ST. It is not the norm for a big vehicle manufacturer to build a transmission for one single specific model.
