Tricks to Boost the W5A580 Transmission in Your Rock Crawling Jeep

Posted by on Monday, August 4th, 2014

The W5A580 is a five-speed automatic transmission built by Mercedes Benz for use in a number of Chrysler branded vehicles (back when MB owned Chrysler). This is an aluminum transmission that uses a full electronic valve body and lock up torque converter. It comes with a very low 3.58:1 ratio first gear (great for rapid takeoff or rock crawling) and a below average 0.83:1 ratio (17% overdrive) fifth gear. A cool feature on this transmission in that it comes with a manual mode that gives you more control over the vehicle’s shifting characteristics.

This transmission was deigned to be used with vehicles that had the engine mounted in a longitudinal position and could be used in both two-wheel drive and four-wheel drive applications (with a transfer case). The W5A580 transmission could be found in many different Chrysler vehicles, including the Dodge Magnum, the Chrysler 300, the Charger, the Challenger, the Durango, the Jeep Commander, and the Grand Cherokee. It could also be found in the Jeep Wrangler.
