Don’t Let the ZF 8HP Transmission in Your Audi A5 Leave You Stranded

Posted by on Thursday, July 24th, 2014

The 8HP is an eight-speed automatic transmission built by the ZF Friedrichshafen Company. The 8HP comes in a number of varieties, including the 8HP30, the 8HP45, the 8HP55, the 8HP70 and the 8HP90. The weakest of the varieties, the 8HP30, can handle up to 300 N-m of torque. The strongest–the 8HP90– can handle an unbelievable 900 N-m of torque.  The 8HP was designed to replace the 6HP transmission–a six-speed automatic– mainly to obtain better gas mileage in the vehicles it was used in. This transmission first went into production in 2008 and remains in production today.  The 8HP has a very steep 4.69:1 ratio first gear (excellent for quick take-offs), and a very generous overdrive ratio of 0.66:1 (great for maximizing gas mileage). A different version of the 8HP can be found in a wide variety of vehicles, including the Audi A4, the Bentley Mulsanne, the BMW 3 series, the Chrysler 300, the Dodge Durango, the Jaguar XF, the Lancia Thema, and the stellar Audi A5.

The new generation Beatle featured the 01M automatic transmission.

The 01M is a four speed automatic transmission designed and built by Volkswagen. It precedes the 096 four speed, and shares some common parts with this transmission. The 01M was first put into product in 1995 and remained in use through the end of the 2005 model year. This transmission was used in a number of VW vehicles including the Jetta, the Golf, the GTI, and the very popular new generation Beatle. It was also used in a transverse engine position (with a unique transmission case) in the Passat.

VW makes excellent cars and components. You can expect a long and useful life from the 01M transmission in your Volkswagens – that is, as long as you maintain it correctly. For some reason, most vehicles owners never give much thought to maintaining their transmissions. Everyone is taught form a young age to keep the maintenance up on your vehicle’s motor. The same should apply to the transmission.
