It’s the constant debate – are manual transmissions better than automatic ones? Or do the automatic versions prevail over their manual counterparts? Why is answer this question important? Well for one, it allows the consumer (you) to make a better decision when purchasing a vehicle. In the following sections, we’ll talk about some of the advantages and disadvantages of each one, so that you can make a better decision as to which one is right for you.

Costs

In general, manual transmissions cost less than automatic transmissions to start out with. If you were to visit a dealer and find two models that are the same, but differ in their transmissions, you would probably notice that the stick-shift version would be much cheaper. Automatic transmissions are also usually much cheaper to fix and maintain. As far as costs are concerned, automatic transmissions are cheaper in the long run.

Maintenance

Ask any mechanic and they’ll tell you that working on manual transmissions is harder than working on automatic transmissions. So, if you decide to take the DIY approach and repair your transmission, you’ll find that working on automatic transmissions will be much easier. They are also easier to maintain, meaning they are more likely to last longer since you won’t need to change out their fluids as often.

Operation

As far as operation is concerned, automatic transmissions are better hands down. Ask any North American driver and most will tell you that they prefer automatic models. Granted, this isn’t the same for every country in the world, but it’s safe to say that the majority of the world’s population prefers automatic transmissions versus manual ones.

City Driving

If you live in a crowded city, automatic transmissions are likely a better option. After all, there’s nothing more annoying that having to “shift up and shift down” at every single red light. This is especially true if you live in an exceptionally crowded city like New York, Miami, or Los Angles. For city drivers, or drivers who find themselves stuck in traffic on a daily basis, automatic transmissions are the way to go!

Fuel Economy

This sort of falls under the same category as ‘Costs’ but it’s important enough to be mentioned in a class of its own. First and foremost, there seems to be a common misconception that all manual transmission vehicles get better fuel economy than automatic transmissions. But this isn’t the case, and there are examples to back this up. With that being said, fuel economy tends to be better for stick-shift vehicles, although newer technologies and innovations are helping automatic models surpass this. Either way, this point gets awarded to stick shift models.

In the end, for most people, an automatic transmission is the best option as it’s easier, safer and has a higher resale value as most people don’t want to deal with an annoying stick shift all the time.  If you are searching for a quality automatic transmission, check out the 4L60E GM 4-Speed Automatic Transmission.
