The 6L80 is a six-speed automatic transmission built by General Motors. It shares many parts in common with another GM transmission; the 6L90. The 6L80 was designed to replace both the earlier 4L60E and the 4L8oE. The 6L80 was eventually replaced by the 8L90, an eight speed automatic transmission. The 6L80 comes equipped with a very step 4.027: ratio first gear ratio would provide unbelievable acceleration in first gear. It is also blessed with double overdrive gear. Fifth gear come with a 0.85:1 ratio (15% over driven) and six gear comes with a 0.667:1 ratio (33% over driven).

The 6L80 had a fairly short life span, having been first but into production in 2006 and eventually being pulled from production in 2012. This transmission could be found in many heavy duty and performance based vehicles, including the Cadillac XLR-V, the Cadillac STS-V, the GMC Yukon Denali, the Hummer H2, the Chevrolet Camaro and the Chevy Corvette. It could also be found in the Pontiac G8.

The Pontiac G8 came wih the 6L80 transmission.

The Pontiac G8 is a rear wheel drive sedan produced by GM’s Australian arm Holden Motors. The G8 only saw a little more than a year’s production, due to the fact that GM decided to shut Pontiac down during one of the worst economical period our country has ever seen.  The G8 was available with three different engines; the 3.6 liter V6 engine, and 6.0 liter L76 engine, and a powerful 6.2 liter LS3 motor. It was the car equipped with the LS3 motors that received the 6L80 transmission.  The G8 was built on the GM Zeta platform, the same platform found under the Chevy Camaro and the Chevrolet Caprice.

The LS3 equipped G8s were a wolf in sleep clothing. The car was a real performance sleeper. Because the car was built to appeal to the widest audience, the engineers left a lot of room from improvement in the transmission.  That is an interesting thing about a lot of cars- people tend to think that what they get out of the store is the only way a car was meant to be, but that isn’t the case.

You can add on to your car in a lot scenarios, and make it stronger to fit your needs and your wants. It is an important lesson: what you get isn’t all that you can get. Here is a good performance accessory that should really bring the 6L80 transmission in your Pontiac G8 to life.

At the top of your list should be a hand held tuner. In the old days, one would modify the transmission with a shift kit. This required partially disassembling the transmission and was a long and mess job. With a hand held tuner, all you need to do is plug it into the OBD II port under the dash and upload a new performance program with the push of a switch.  The tuner will allow you to make all sort of modifications to the transmission, including when it upshifts, when it down shifts, when the torque converter locks up and how hard and firm the shifts are.
