Upgrading The Performance Of the 4L80E In Your Chevrolet Avalanche Is Easy

The 4L80E is a very heavy duty four speed automatic transmission designed and built by General Motors. It comes from a family of transmissions that include the 4L85E. Both are heavily based on the original heavy duty Th400 three speed automatic transmission.  For an automatic overdrive transmission, the 4L80E does not feature a very aggressive first gear ratio, only coming in at 2.48:1.  The same can be said for the overdrive gear – it is weak.  It comes in at a ratio of 0.75:1 (25% over driven). This transmission is fully electronic, and uses a variety of sensors and electrical solenoids to control the shifting characteristics of the transmission.

Designed to handle up to 440 Ft-lbs of torque, this transmission is usually found in heavy duty trucks and cars that are heavy in their overall weight. This transmission can be found in many GM vehicles, including the Suburban, the GMC Yukon, the Hummer H1 and the GMC Savana full size van. In addition, it can be found in many non GM vehicles, including the Jaguar XJR, the Jaguar XJ12, the Bentley Eight and the Rolls-Royce Silver Spirit. It can also be found in the Chevrolet Avalanche.

The Chevrolet Avalanche is an interesting vehicle. It is a hybrid that is half heavy duty truck, and half full size SUV. It is equipped with a very short pickup truck bed, but can be reconfigured to carry more cargo by opening up the back of the passage compartment.  It is available only as a four door model. Options include your choice of two wheel drive or four wheel drive, and a number of trim packages that include a full luxury leather interior. This truck in designed for the gentleman farmer, who can use it for work during the day and they take it out on the town at night.

While the 4L80E is adequate for a majority of owners, there are those with a performance background that desire a little more from the factory’s version of the 4L80E. Here are a couple tips on increase the performance fun factor on your 4L80E transmission.

Install an aftermarket shift kit.  Installing a shift kit will result in a number of performance benefits.  It will give you the option of manually holding the transmission in one gear longer. This is great when you need that little extra power for towing. It will also give you the ability to down shift at almost any speed, a benefit that will save your brakes on steep declines. A shift kit will also increase the line pressure of your transmission, providing for more gripping force on the clutch packs and will help prevent them from slipping under heavy loads.

An alternative to a shift kit would be a hand held tuner. Because the transmission in primarily electronically controlled, many of the features that you get with installing a shift kit can be accomplished quickly with a  tuner. The down side is the cost of a hand held tuner. A shift kit will probably set you back less than one hundred dollar. A tuner will run in the neighborhood of $300 – $500.
