Here Is Some Good Advice On Extending The Lifespan Of Your Customer’s A750F Transmission

The A750F transmission is an automatic made by Toyota. It has 5 speeds and was used exclusively in 4×4 vehicles. It was first put into production in 2003 and remains in production today.  It was used in many popular Toyota trucks, including the Tacoma, Tundra, 4Runner, FJ Cruiser, Land Cruiser (100-series and the Prado), GX 470, LX 470, Fortuner and the Hilux.  Because it was so widely used, and because it came in trucks which are often abused by their owners, there stands a good chance you will see one in your shop soon, if you haven’t already. Let’s take a look at a couple of  ways you can beef up your customer’s transmission and hopefully extend its life.

Since heat is the number one killer of all automatic transmissions of any make or model, let’s address this area first. The A750F comes exclusively in trucks, some of them full size.  And we all know what people do with trucks. They abuse them; them overload them and tow way over the maximum factory recommended weight limit. Towing, next to racing, creates the most heat of any activity you can put you transmission through.

To combat excessive heat it is highly recommended that you install an aftermarket transmission cooler on your customer’s vehicle. You want to install the biggest cooler that will fit your customer’s vehicle.  For an extra once of protection, install a cooler that has a built in fan.

Remember this; ideally you do not want your customer’s transmission temperature to get much over 200 degrees. At temperatures as low as 240 degree, the transmission fluid can start to turn to varnish.  Here is another important fact: For every 20 degrees you go above 200 degree, you cut the life expectancy of the transmission by a factor of two. Install a transmission temperature gauge to go along with your aftermarket transmission cooler.  If your customer notices the transmission getting excessively hot, tell them to pull over and allow it to cool down a bit.

Another good upgrade for your customer’s A750F transmission is a deep aluminum oil pan. Notice I said aluminum, and not steel. I give that advice because aluminum dissipates heat much better and that will aid in keeping the transmission cooler. A deep pan, on average, will usually hold an two extra quarts of fluid. This extra fluid could make the difference between the transmission living and dying under server use. Finally, an aluminum pan is much more ridged than steel and that aids in strengthening the transmission case.

Install the biggest cooler possible


Sooner or later, either from high mileage or abuse, your customer is going to need to replace thier transmission. After all, they are not designed to last forever. I want to leave you with one more good piece of advice; install a re-manufactured transmission over one that was simply rebuilt. First of all, a re-manufactured transmission is going to include modifications and upgrades designed to make them stronger, more durable and last longer, while at the same time addressing common problems associated with this model of transmission. A rebuilt transmission will not.  Secondly, the re-manufactured transmission is going to include a much better warranty. Usually three years compared to an average 90 days for a rebuilt transmission.
