When was the last time you took off your jacket, kicked off those Italian leather shoes, rolled up your sleeves, and took an honest look at the identity of your brand?
Ok, most of us probably don’t wear fancy shoes. And if you’re in the aftermarket, your suit might even have your name embroidered on the front. Regardless of what your wardrobe looks like, do you know what message you’re delivering to your customers when they walk into your office/store? Even more importantly, do you care?
I recently took on a new position and have been lucky enough to travel to corporate locations across the country. I’ve tasted a lot of bad coffee, eaten stale cookies, and have flipped through numerous outdated magazines.
With this collection of experiences, there have been good and bad trends. When it comes to brands that command loyalty in our industry, though, they all have these 3 things in common:
Display of corporate images that relate directly to customers.

  • We all love bright red Ferrari’s with $100 bills draped over the hood, but unless you are selling bright red Ferrari’s with $100 bills draped over the hood, I wouldn’t have that image on the wall of my corporate reception area. You’re better than that and so is your brand.

A welcome wagon that is ready to help with anything. Literally, ANYTHING.

  • It’s one thing to say, “Hello, how may I help you?” It is another thing to mean it. Is your reception team willing to dig a customer’s car out of the snow, or are you more of a “Please have a seat and someone will be right with you,” type of company?

Treating competitor brands with respect.

  • I am a huge Green Bay Packer fan, and I love to see a picture of the Chicago Bears logo stamped on a toilet as much as the next guy, but there is a time and a place for trash talking. Whether a rival sports team or your biggest competitor, keep the bad-mouthing out of your office whenever possible.

This isn’t a top-secret recipe for branding success, but taking even one of these things to heart will put you well on your way to a better business image. What do your customers think when they walk through your doors? Would you buy from you right now?
