\nGrowing up, my gramma was always the queen of colorful country colloquialisms. Some left me scratching my head (I still don\u2019t know what gobbledygook<\/i> is). But others were little gems of country wisdom.
\n\u201cHe\u2019s as windy as a sack full of farts,\u201d<\/em> to describe a particularly loquacious individual.
\n\u201cHe\u2019s so full of s#*% his eyes are brown,\u201d<\/em> for those who are prone to exaggerate or lie.
\n\u201cHe couldn\u2019t find his a$& with both hands tied behind his back,\u201d<\/em> for the woefully inept.
\nSimple? Maybe. Vulgar? Probably. Endearing? Terribly.
\nOne of my all-time favorite gramma expressions has got to be: \u201cI wish I could buy him for what he\u2019s worth and sell him for what he thinks<\/strong> he\u2019s worth.\u201d<\/em>
\nIt wasn\u2019t until later in life that I came to fully appreciate this saying, particularly since we all know someone who fits this description. Hell, you\u2019ve probably worked with one of these people. You know, the guy who\u2019s managed to overshoot the land of the confident professional and launched himself into the realm of cocky a-hole, where he and every other malignant narcissist has declared himself king.
\nWhen you\u2019re selling to customers, you\u2019ve got to walk the line between confidence and cockiness:
\nConfidence is listening to others; Cockiness is talking to hear the sound of your own voice.<\/strong>
\nConfidence is being forthright with weaknesses; Cockiness is putting lipstick on a pig.<\/strong>
\nConfidence is working to achieve results; Cockiness is pissing into the wind.<\/strong>
\nConfidence is following through on your promise; Cockiness is all sizzle and no steak.\u00a0<\/strong>
\nConfidence brings value to your company; Cockiness is about as useful as a screen door on a submarine.<\/strong>
\nSo how do walk this fine line? With humility, tact, and honesty. There\u2019s nothing wrong with a little swagger \u2013 it\u2019s why some of your best customers only buy from you and only you \u2013 just make sure you\u2019ve got the goods to back it up. After all, don\u2019t nobody want a cowboy who\u2019s all hat and no cattle.<\/p>\n
