\nPersonally, I really hate hearing them. And yes I make them, too. But it isn\u2019t without being fully aware once one escapes my lips \u2013 and trying like hell to make sure it doesn\u2019t happen again.
\nExcuses are like quicksand. The more frequently you make them, the easier and easier it becomes. Until, one day, you don\u2019t even realize you\u2019re making them anymore.
\nTake a look at 5 common, workplace excuses.<\/p>\n

  1. Boss, I\u2019m on my way in right now. Traffic is just really bad.<\/li>\n
  2. Sorry I missed the conference call. I had another meeting that ran late.<\/li>\n
  3. My apologies for the delay in responding to your email. Your message must have gotten caught in Spam.<\/li>\n

    So, how many can you own up to? Even if it\u2019s only one (or yours aren\u2019t on this list), I guarantee that excuses aren\u2019t helping you professionally.
    \nExcuses\u2026
    \n\u2026attempt to justify a fault.
    \n\u2026hide genuine, honest reasons.
    \n\u2026pass blame.
    \n\u2026are easy if you don\u2019t want to be dependable.
    \n\u2026mean more to the giver than receiver.
    \n\u2026make some listeners tune out entirely.
    \n\u2026anger customers.
    \n\u2026mean that something else was more important.
    \n\u2026are a crutch for poor follow-through.
    \n\u2026damage credibility.
    \nWish you had a better relationship with your coworkers? Or that your boss would give you more responsibility? Or that customers bought from you more often? Or that you\u2019d land that promotion? Stop and take note of the excuses you make.
    \nA few tweaks of your words \u2013 and a bit more mindfulness \u2013 could be all that is between where you are and where you want to be.<\/p>\n
