He doles out loads of pointless paperwork to his staff, and is one of those bosses who tells you he\u2019s going to need you to work on Saturday \u2013 on Friday afternoon.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/character\/ch0009719\/?ref_=tt_cl_t15\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u201cThe Michael Scott\u201d<\/a>\u00a0The sales guy who was promoted to a manager because of how he excelled? Yep, that\u2019s Michael Scott. As a leader, he cares far more about having a friendly rapport with his staff than managing the business in front of him. He resorts to whatever he has to to be the center of attention, and is the kind of leader who takes credit for the ideas of his team.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/character\/ch0009660\/?ref_=fn_al_ch_1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u201cThe Miranda Priestly\u201d<\/a> Miranda Priestly\u2019s opinion is the only one that matters. Better still, it is always right. Unemotional in her decisions and relationships at work, she is the boss who doesn\u2019t take the impossible as such. No matter the request, or off-hour it\u2019s given, it had better be figured out.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/character\/ch0003020\/bio\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u201cThe Mr. Burns\u201d<\/a>\u00a0Mr. Burns has been in a position of authority for longer than most of his employees have been alive. He doesn\u2019t know names, makes no effort to learn them, and will make any decision that results in more money in his pocket \u2013 even at the cost of employee safety.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Personally, I\u2019ve always liked Boss\u2019s Day. Though I\u2019ve had some bad bosses \u2013some of which were so much like the characters above that I often wondered if they inspired them \u2013I\u2019ve been fortunate to work under some truly great bosses.<br \/>\nBosses who:<br \/>\n&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Saw qualities in me that I never recognized myself<br \/>\n&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Allowed me opportunities to travel and take risks<br \/>\n&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Gave me relative autonomy<br \/>\n&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Encouraged me to share my opinion<br \/>\n&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Understood the importance of company culture \u2013 and gave the ability to impact it directly.<br \/>\nWhat\u2019s my point? You don\u2019t need a stellar boss to be a rockstar in your own right. But having a boss \u2013a mentor \u2013who possesses several (or if you\u2019re lucky enough, <strong><em>most)<\/em><\/strong> of the qualities I mentioned above sure does make it easier.<br \/>\nIf you\u2019re not one to celebrate today\u2019s Hallmark-esque holiday, that\u2019s cool. At the very least, take it as an opportunity to reflect on what your boss is (or isn\u2019t) \u2013 and what you are because of it.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><i><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-2479\" src=\"http:\/\/etereman.com\/remanu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/AVA_JenniferP.jpg\" alt=\"AVA_JenniferP\" width=\"100\" height=\"100\" \/><\/i><br \/>\n<i>Some bosses are great.
