You\u2019re born with all the intelligence you\u2019ll ever have and talent alone determines your success.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>Growth-Minded<\/strong> people feel that basic qualities are developed through practice, learning, and hard work. Intelligence and talent are just a foundation upon which to build proficiency and mastery that will then lead to success.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Now, let\u2019s go back to your results. If you\u2019re of a Fixed Mindset, I\u2019ve got some bad news for you: The way you view intelligence is wrong \u2013 and it may be harming your success as a leader.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify\">How You Praise Matters<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">I recently attended a conference with a session led by Dr. Ryan Bisel, an associate professor of communication at the University of Oklahoma. In his presentation, Bisel highlighted a study in which three groups of children were given a puzzle to solve. Upon completion of the puzzle, researchers praised the participants in slightly different ways.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Group A, was told \u201cYou did a great job. You must have worked really hard to solve it.\u201d (Growth-Minded Praise).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Group B, was told \u201cYou did a great job. You must be really smart.\u201d (Fixed-Minded Praise).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">And Group C, was simply told \u201cYou did a great job.\u201d (Control Group)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Now, here\u2019s where things get interesting. When asked if they\u2019d like to try the puzzle again:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Group A overwhelmingly decided to try again.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Group C was more or less neutral.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Group B overwhelmingly decided <em>not<\/em> to try again.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Why? Even among children, it all comes down to ego. Group A decided to\u00a0try\u00a0again because their first attempt was just a baseline and they felt that the only way to do better is to practice. Group B felt no reason to try harder because their ability to complete the puzzle had become part of their identities and they feared that not doing well on subsequent attempts would change the researcher&#8217;s\u00a0opinion about their intelligence.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Now, think about how you interact with your employees. Have you ever told someone that they\u2019re a <em>natural<\/em> salesman? A <em>gifted<\/em> builder? A <em>born<\/em> communicator? That\u2019s a Fixed-Minded compliment. Yeah, it feels nice to the person receiving the compliment, but you\u2019re essentially discouraging that employee from trying harder.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify\">Here&#8217;s the Good News<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Don\u2019t feel so down on yourselves, Fixed-Mindsetters. Change is possible.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Just think of it this way: Are you where you are today because you emerged from the womb ready for your current job as a manager, business owner, or whatever the case may be? Or did you work hard, acquire skills, and learn from mistakes to get to where you are today \u2013 and plan on continuing to learn and work to get to where you want to be?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">By acknowledging your mindset and how it can affect the effort your employees demonstrate, you can actively become more mindful of how you compliment your employees. With a few simple language tweaks, you can turn a compliment into a catalyst for improvement.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Instead of saying \u201cYou\u2019re a natural salesman.\u201d, try saying \u201cYou\u2019re a <em>motivated<\/em> salesman.\u201d Instead of \u201cYou\u2019re a gifted builder.\u201d, you can say \u201cYou\u2019re a <em>dedicated<\/em> builder.\u201d Instead of \u201cYou\u2019re a born communicator.\u201d, how about \u201cYou\u2019re a <em>passionate<\/em> communicator.\u201d See the difference? You&#8217;re feeding your employee&#8217;s egos with genuine compliments while encouraging effort and continuous improvement.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify\">Bringing it Home<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Did you learn anything surprising about your mindset?
