Beyond the new 160,000 square foot production facility that will be coming online in the near future, we\u2019ve been adding staff to our Customer Loyalty teams. That means lots and lots of interviews.<br \/>\nNow, I\u2019ve been in my fair share of interviews, but never as the interviewer. When I was asked to help vet candidates, I was excited for the opportunity to, in some small way, help shape this growing team. For me, how someone may fit with our unique culture is almost as important as his or her skill.<br \/>\nAfter lobbing in some basic questions \u2013 what did your former job entail, what drew you to this position, what can you bring to the team, etc. \u2013 I like to throw a curveball or two.<\/p>\n<h3><em>\u201cWhat\u2019s your spirit animal?\u201d<\/em><\/h3>\n<p>Reactions run the gamut from deer-in-headlights, to confusion, to amusement. Am I really going to judge a candidate based on their spirit animal? No. That\u2019s ridiculous. But I am going to judge a candidate on their ability to think on their feet, gather their thoughts, and put together a reasonably convincing answer.<br \/>\nSure, these questions may seem sadistic. But they have a clear purpose \u2013 to see how well someone will fit within our quick-witted team and navigate the fast-paced sales environment. To hire someone knowing that they\u2019re not a good fit is a disservice to all parties involved. In those terms, even something as goofy as \u201cWhat\u2019s your spirit animal?\u201d is vital.<br \/>\nI asked the rest of the team to share their favorite curveball questions and why they like them.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>\u201c\u2018If you had to be shipwrecked on a deserted island, but all your basic human needs were taken care of, what two items would you want to have with you?\u2019 It shows what is most important to you. Are you logical, emotional, or just want to enjoy life?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>\u2013 <a title=\"The Case of the Common Ground\" href=\"http:\/\/etereman.com\/remanu\/case-of-the-common-ground\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Megan Drews<\/a>, The Trans Detective (Retail Service Manager)<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>\u201c\u2018What do you think about when you are alone in your car?\u2019 It can answer a few questions: Do you think when you\u2019re alone? What are your primary concerns in life? Are you creative? Or even, do you seek continuous improvement?<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>\u2013 <a title=\"When Taking a Leap, Seek Solid Ground\" href=\"http:\/\/etereman.com\/remanu\/when-taking-a-leap-seek-solid-ground\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ben Stern<\/a>, The Sales Cyclist (Inside Sales Manager)<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>\u201cI\u2019ve never been asked this one, but my daughter has: \u2018If you could high five anyone in the world who would it be?\u2019 It\u2019s a very fun question.
