\nI recently had a conversation with a few of my coworkers about networking. The general consensus? Unless you are looking for a job, it\u2019s not worth the time. This is where I think (and know) they are wrong. Networking is always a good idea – especially for a business owner.
\nYes, networking events can be an evening of generic, watered-down conversation about the local sports team and the weather, but they are also a goldmine for referrals, sharing ideas, and making connections.
\nAbout a year ago, my husband and I renovated our house. We did most of the work ourselves, but needed to contract out a few services like drywall, roofing, and electrical. How did we decide who to use? We didn\u2019t look anyone up or read any online reviews. We asked around our own network for who was the best. Through connections and personal referrals, we moved forward with a few good names – and ended up working with some wonderful contractors.
\nWouldn\u2019t it be nice if when someone uttered the phrase, \u201cI\u2019ve got a guy for that,\u201d<\/em> you were that guy? Becoming the go-to for your particular business doesn\u2019t need to be complicated. Here are three ways to get you started:<\/p>\n

  1. Get out there.<\/strong> Sounds easy, but sometimes it\u2019s not. If networking is painful for you, make a small commitment of once a month. Chances are, your city has organized networking events and a quick Google search will show you the way. Networking of course also takes place outside of organized events. Make an effort to get involved in your community; friends and neighbors are a good start to a growing network.<\/li>\n
  2. Have something to say.<\/strong> Conversations with complete strangers will most likely start out with small talk, so make sure you can talk small. Read the headlines and brief yourself on daily news, but don\u2019t stay there. Be able to tell people what you do \u2013 and why you and your business should be remembered.<\/li>\n
  3. Follow up.<\/strong> Networking can lead to a handful of business cards. Mission accomplished? Nope. The conversation continues. Send a short email or make a phone call the following week. Offer to buy that person a cup of coffee or just let them know that you enjoyed your conversation the other night.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    A friend, neighbor, or the other half of a great conversation can pass along a referral. Get out there, meet people, and tell them what you do. Speak passionately about your expertise, and make a connection that is worth remembering first.
