And here is where I\u2019d argue that you\u2019re wrong.<br \/>\nYou see, if I were to put the best, brightest sales guy or gal I know up against Don Quixote (<em>setting aside the fact that he is dead \u2013 and fictitious<\/em>), I\u2019d be in for some secondary embarrassment on my colleague&#8217;s behalf.<br \/>\nAllow me to explain.<br \/>\nThere are several truths I know about sales:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Sales is a grind.<\/li>\n<li>Sales at its core is a passion. Either you have \u201cit\u201d \u2013 or you don\u2019t.<\/li>\n<li>Selling is not for the faint of heart. Or will. Or ego.<\/li>\n<li>A sale turns in to a relationship when you\u2019re willing to do what the first guy wouldn\u2019t, couldn\u2019t, or didn\u2019t.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So what does this all have to do with the namesake of a 400-year-old classic? <em>(In case you&#8217;re unfamiliar, check\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Quixote-Penguin-Classics-Cervantes-Saavedra\/dp\/0142437239\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Amazon<\/a>\u00a0for a copy.)<\/em><br \/>\nI\u2019ll be honest. Even on my best, most caffeinated day, Don Quixote would outsell me. I know our business well. At times, I\u2019m somewhat of a nerd about transmissions. And the thrill of the sale? I feel that. But at the end of the day, I\u2019m missing something \u2013 that almost-blind faith to keep marching on when things get tough, when doors slam in my face, when there seems to be no end to the no&#8217;s in sight.<br \/>\nNow, it\u2019s your turn. How do you think your sales skills would stack up? The last time you took inventory of your skill set, especially in a non-traditional comparison, might have been a while ago \u2013 and that\u2019s ok.<br \/>\nThink about how you\u2019d answer the following. If you aren&#8217;t in sales (and arguably, we all are \u2013 but that\u2019s a different article), think about how your team would answer instead.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><strong><em>True or false:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"text-align: left\"><em><strong>Some mistakes with customers can\u2019t be overcome.<\/strong><\/em><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left\"><em><strong>What is right for the customer and what is right for my business are different.<\/strong><\/em><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left\"><em><strong>Some competitors just can\u2019t be beat.<\/strong><\/em><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left\"><em><strong>There is such a thing as an impossible sale.<\/strong><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>I\u2019m going out on a relatively safe limb here when I say that if you\u2019re Don Quixote, the answer to all of these would be false. He wasn\u2019t selling products, tools, or services on his adventures, but as a character he embodies most of if not all of the qualities that make for a salesman who will stand the test of time. \u00a0If your sales numbers, attitude, or reason for why you do what you do have fallen flat, perhaps all you need to turn your sales around is to chase a few windmills.<br \/>\n<em>photo credit:\u00a9 iStock.com\/\u00a0-101PHOTO-<\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><i><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-3033\" src=\"http:\/\/etereman.com\/remanu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/JP2015-150x150.jpeg\" alt=\"JP2015\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/i><br \/>\n<i>Have your sales fallen flat?
