\nYesterday was Captain Reman\u2019s birthday. Between wishing him well and thinking about cake (because, let\u2019s be honest, cake makes even an already great day better<\/em>), I found myself thinking about Reman U. After all, this is pretty much where the \u201cCaptain Reman\u201d name first came to be.
\nBut beyond the alter ego (and a pretty hilarious caped caricature that sometimes makes an appearance<\/em>) is a boss, sales guy, and leader with more than a few insights.
\nSo for this week, I wanted to share with you my five favorite pieces of advice that he\u2019s given me over the years – and what they mean for selling, hustling, and doing better work.
\nCaped Quote #1<\/strong>: \u201cYou\u2019ll never get what you don\u2019t ask for.\u201d <\/strong><\/em>
\nIf you have a habit like me of dancing around important questions, hear this well. Whether it be a raise, a new role, or a change in responsibility, you have zero chance of getting what you want if you never actually ask for it. Sure, the answer could be \u201cno.\u201d Or, it could be something even better than a \u201cyes.\u201d
\nCaped Quote #2:<\/strong> \u201cNo risk, no nothing.\u201d <\/strong><\/em>
\nPutting your ideas out into the world is scary. It opens you up to failure and criticism. But taking risks, challenging the status quo, and going in the opposite direction of \u201cthe way it\u2019s always been done\u201d is how better products, processes, and teams are made. Is the road uncomfortable? Good.
\nCaped Quote #3: \u201cYou\u2019re either in sales or you\u2019re wrong.\u201d <\/em><\/strong>
\nYour receptionist is in sales. Your builder is in sales. When you\u2019re in the cheering section at your son\u2019s soccer game, you\u2019re in sales. You don\u2019t have to be answering inbound calls or have \u201csales guy\u201d on your business card to be in a position of impacting a customer, a company\u2019s bottom line, or how others see you.
\nCaped Quote #4:<\/strong> \u201cYou end up with what you put up with.\u201d <\/strong><\/em>
\nResponsible for work other than your own? It\u2019s frustrating when the people around you aren\u2019t operating on their best level. Unless you address any issue, lack of training, or learning opportunity directly, you\u2019ll be shortchanging yourself.
\nCaped Quote #5: \u201cYou don\u2019t have to be sick to get better.\u201d <\/em><\/strong>
\nFor me, these words in particular are some of the hardest to hear. Or, re-hear. Learning a new skill, becoming a better manager, or working on soft skills shouldn\u2019t cause your ego to wave its inadequacy flag. Improvement in and of itself starts with wanting to and being willing to.
