\nI\u2019ve been standing in line for 30 minutes or so by the time I realize I may not get to eat breakfast today. I\u2019m in line for, what I\u2019ve been told, is the most amazing breakfast burrito on the planet. Apparently it\u2019s no secret, because Good Eggs is packed. Imagine a Qdoba or Chipotle but instead of meat, these guys make eggs, potatoes, and vegetables and wrap them up in a giant tortilla. There are three things on the menu: basic, standard, and deluxe wrap. And there are one hundred people in line to order them at the counter.
\nGood Eggs describes itself as \u201cA Door County Breakfast Cabana serving omelet wraps made to order on the shores of Ephraim’s beautiful Eagle Harbor.\u201d<\/em> I\u2019m salivating from the smell of the food the owner is cooking behind the counter, the sounds the eggs make when they hit the griddle, and the smiles and reactions on the faces of those lucky souls who got here before me as they take their first bites.
\nAnd then, out of nowhere, I see something that makes my heart stop: Good Eggs doesn\u2019t take credit cards. <\/strong>And guess what? I don\u2019t have any cash on me. I wave my wife and kids over from their picnic bench outside and ask them if they have any money. Nope.<\/em> I\u2019m starving at this point and the kids are mad at me because they want eggs. I flag down one of the young women behind the counter and double-check about the credit cards.
\n\u201cWe don\u2019t take credit cards, no,\u201d<\/em> she says. \u201cBut we have an ATM over there.\u201d<\/em>
\nPhew. I\u2019m saved. Or so I think.
\n\u201cBut the ATM is out of order right now,\u201d<\/em> she says.
\nNo eggs for this guy. Damn.
\n\u201cWe\u2019re happy to take a check,\u201d<\/em> she says.
\n\u201cWho the heck carries a checkbook<\/em>?\u201d I think to myself, but I simply say, \u201cI don\u2019t have any checks. I guess I\u2019ll have to come back tomorrow.\u201d<\/em>
\n\u201cWe also take customer promises,\u201d<\/em> she says.
\n\u201cWhat\u2019s a customer promise?\u201d<\/em> I ask.
\n\u201cIt\u2019s when you order whatever you want and tell us you\u2019ll come back later with the money,\u201d<\/em> she explains.
\n\u201cBut what if I don\u2019t come back?\u201d<\/em> I tease.
\nThe girl smiles, looks me dead in the eyes, and says, \u201cWe trust our customers.\u201d<\/em>
\nThen she walked away. I ordered my eggs, ate the most amazing breakfast ever, and let the lesson this young girl just imparted on me sink in.
\nGood Eggs trusts their customers to pay them back. I did that ten minutes later. And now, as a loyal Good Eggs customer, they can trust that I\u2019ll be back next summer and I\u2019ll tell everyone I know (even you\u2026reading this now) to go there if you\u2019re within 100 miles of Door County at any point during your life.
