I\u2019m an easy interview, but a tough judge. I don\u2019t use personality or behavioral tests – I\u2019ve tried them all, and I do see some value there, but I\u2019ve also relied on them for hiring decisions which I later came to regret.
\nI don\u2019t call your references. It\u2019s a waste of my time and theirs. You\u2019d never give me a reference that would say anything other than the most amazing and wonderful things about you anyway.
\nI do call your customers. I can count on them to tell me what I need to know about you.
\nI ask you unique and powerful questions that give me an understanding of your thought process and your philosophies. I give you a tour of our offices, and I introduce you to everyone. How you engage and interact with my people means everything to me.
\nI give you every opportunity to ask me smart questions and to uncover how you can help us the most.
\nI laugh a lot and I have fun.
\nI expect you to do the same.
\nI make quick decisions.
\nIf I like you and I think you\u2019ll win here, I\u2019ll call you quickly and I\u2019ll set up a time for you to come in and shadow some of my people for a few hours.
\n\"Why<\/a>I want you to see what it\u2019s like here from the inside out.
\nI want you to meet people and to decide for yourself if you\u2019re a good fit.
\nIf I don\u2019t ask you to come back, I won\u2019t send you a letter.
\nI just won\u2019t call. Sorry in advance if that frustrates you.
\nPerhaps you would have appreciated the letter below, as this is the letter I\u2019ve always wanted to send to applicants who I did not hire:
\nDear Applicant,
\nIf you are reading this letter it is because I have decided against hiring you. You deserve to know the truth. You deserve to know so that you can:
\na.\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0Stop wondering if I\u2019m ever going to call you back.
\nb.\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0Focus on your other opportunities.
\nc.\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0Improve yourself before your next interview.
\nBasically, I didn\u2019t hire you because some or all of the following are true:
\n\u2022\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0You dressed poorly.
\n\u2022\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0You came late.
\n\u2022\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0You showed up empty-handed.
\n\u2022\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0You didn\u2019t send me a follow-up note or email.
\n\u2022\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0You didn\u2019t fit in or you didn\u2019t stand out.
\n\u2022\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0You didn\u2019t take notes.
\n\u2022\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0You were rude or aloof with my people.
\n\u2022\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0You failed to bring me an idea or a question that demonstrated you were prepared for the interview in terms of me.
\n\u2022\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0You asked me about vacation time, holiday pay, or other cushy benefits way too early in the process.
\n\u2022\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0You have never visited my company\u2019s website<\/a>, our Facebook page<\/a>, or our YouTube channel<\/a>.
\n\u2022\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0You spent $500 creating your resume, you can recite your accomplishments line-for-line, but can\u2019t tell me one thing you learned during your previous employment.
\n\u2022\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0You said or did something that made me question your honesty, your integrity, or your character.
\n\u2022\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0You do not have a single ounce of Google-juice.
\n\u2022\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0Your Facebook account is full of hundreds of pictures of you drinking beer, smoking dope, and wearing nothing but a jock strap.
\n\u2022\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0You told me, quite emphatically, that you left your last three jobs because your boss was an idiot, the people you worked with had the worst attitudes, and\/or because you were treated unfairly.
\n\u2022\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0I asked you about the last business book you read and you couldn\u2019t remember the name.
\n\u2022\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0You did not ask me a single question.
\n\u2022\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0You reeked of \u201cwhat\u2019s in it for me?\u201d rather than \u201chow can we win together?\u201d
\nDon\u2019t feel bad. That\u2019s not my intention. You\u2019re going to be a big success. You\u2019ll just need to be successful somewhere else.
\nIt\u2019s possible, though unlikely, that I am wrong about you. You may be the best thing for our business. You may be the answer to all of our prayers.
\nIf you are, and you believe in your heart that you can help us and that you will be fulfilled and happy doing so, then prove me wrong.<\/strong><\/em>
