This was not the casual hop on the sled and ride to lunch weekend we normally have in Northern Wisconsin.\u00a0 This ride was meant for the most enthusiastic of enthusiasts: definitely not me <em>(or so I thought).<\/em><br \/>\nAs my co-workers and friends can tell you, I nervously talked about the upcoming trip to Michigan.\u00a0 <em>\u201cLet\u2019s hope I don\u2019t hit a tree,\u201d<\/em> was a common phrase I uttered daily.\u00a0 I felt intimidated by the level of rider that would be there over the weekend and fearful that I couldn\u2019t complete the ride, or worse, that I would take a corner too fast and end up crashing and coming home with broken bones.<br \/>\nEach evening leading up to the weekend, I had a conversation with my husband about my concerns. \u00a0He always said the same thing: <em>\u201cYou\u2019ll be fine, you can do this.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0 Nudging me along is something of an expertise of his.<br \/>\nFriday morning came. We loaded up the truck and hit the road early enough to watch the sunrise.\u00a0 This was it. I was only four and half hours away from this snowmobiling weekend becoming a reality.\u00a0 As we drove further north, the scenery changed.\u00a0 More snow and more forest \u2013 it was beautiful.\u00a0 After meeting the other riders, my nerves hadn\u2019t really changed.\u00a0 We signed up for an ambitious 200-mile ride and went to bed early.<br \/>\n<div id=\"attachment_4030\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4030\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4030\" src=\"http:\/\/etereman.com\/remanu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/RU_2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-4030\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>photo credit: American Snowmobiler Magazine<\/em><\/p><\/div><br \/>\nSaturday morning arrived and I was awake before my alarm went off.\u00a0 Nervously, I got ready, adding each layer of clothing and wondering if it was enough; -17 is no joke.\u00a0 We met with our group of 24 and the ride began.\u00a0 I started off a little shaky, but survived the whole ride \u2013 and without crashing. <em>(Phew!) <\/em><br \/>\nThe drive home gave me some much-needed time to reflect on the weekend.\u00a0 Had I learned anything? <em>(Being a REMAN U contributor does that to you.)<\/em> The answer? A solid yes.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Don\u2019t let fear hold you back.<\/strong> I ended up having a great time on the ride and learned what I\u2019m capable of.<\/li>\n<li><strong>A little encouragement goes a long way.<\/strong> Chances are that when you\u2019ve got self-doubt, there is someone in your life that believes in you.\u00a0 Keep these people around.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Don\u2019t cry over spilled milk.<\/strong> Almost in tears in the middle of the woods? Yep, that was me.\u00a0 I was feeling a little overwhelmed and exhausted.\u00a0 I held my tears back after realizing that they wouldn\u2019t help me finish. They would probably also freeze to my cheeks.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>On Monday morning, the same colleagues wishing me well \u2013 and survival \u2013 greeted me heartily, <em>\u201cYou survived!\u201d<\/em> I did that and more.<br \/>\nChances are that I\u2019ll be back in Michigan next winter doing the same ride.\u00a0 And next time, with measurably more confidence and probably <em>(hopefully) <\/em>more enthusiasm, too.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><em><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-2974\" src=\"http:\/\/etereman.com\/remanu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/AVA_RU-Blog-ADaugherty-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"AVA_RU-Blog-ADaugherty\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/>What&#8217;s fear&#8217;s place in growth?
