Two hours in, somebody slipped me a note\u00a0that read, \u201cWhat\u2019s the secret to success?\u201d<br \/>\n<strong>I responded, \u201cTwo words \u2013 hard work.\u201d<\/strong><br \/>\nSomehow I think the audience felt cheated, so I decided to continue.<br \/>\n<strong>&#8220;Want a more in depth answer?\u201d<\/strong> I asked. <strong>\u201cWork your tail off.\u201d<\/strong><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/etereman.com\/remanu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/no_shortcuts_to_success.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-477\" style=\"margin: 10px\" title=\"no_shortcuts_to_success\" src=\"http:\/\/etereman.com\/remanu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/no_shortcuts_to_success-215x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"215\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>The reality is that salespeople often look\u00a0for shortcuts. They want the easiest path to success (aka commission\u00a0checks).<br \/>\nHere\u2019s the good news: there are no shortcuts. If you want to win, you\u2019ve got<br \/>\nto be willing to work harder than your competition.<br \/>\nSure, sometimes luck plays a role. But, as one of my mentors often reminds<br \/>\nme, \u201cHard work makes luck.\u201d<br \/>\nSuccess in selling means destroying your quota. It means having a closing<br \/>\nratio that exceeds that of your teammates and your competitors. Success in<br \/>\nselling means becoming your best, earning customer loyalty, and not having<br \/>\nto cold call.<br \/>\nSuccess is the reward you get when you think the right thoughts, when you\u00a0take the right actions, when you bounce back from adversity, when you fully\u00a0dedicate yourself to your craft, and when you do the hard work it takes to\u00a0become known as a value provider and resource rather than simply \u201csales\u00a0guy.\u201d<br \/>\nI have studied thousands of successful salespeople across hundreds of\u00a0industries. While many of these salespeople have their own definition for\u00a0success, most of them agree on what it takes to get there.<br \/>\nHere are the six secrets to sales success:<br \/>\n1.<strong> Work hard. Really hard.\u00a0<\/strong>The world doesn\u2019t owe you anything. Nor\u00a0does your boss. The only one who owes anyone anything is YOU. You owe it to\u00a0yourself to skip tomorrow\u2019s episode of Dancing with the Stars and instead\u00a0make a half-dozen sales calls.<br \/>\n2. <strong>Start early, stay late.<\/strong> Don\u2019t worry about how many hours you\u2019re\u00a0working. Hit your numbers and then look for ways to become more efficient.\u00a0But first, hit your numbers.<br \/>\n3. <strong>If you\u2019re not getting what you want, you\u2019re probably not asking for<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>it.<\/strong>\u00a0So, ask for it. Ask your customers, your boss, your prospects.<br \/>\n4. <strong>Find your passion.<\/strong> Success in selling has more to do with your\u00a0confidence, your beliefs, and your passion than anything else. If you\u2019re not\u00a0passionate about your company, your product, and your ability to help your\u00a0customers, you\u2019ll never be successful.<br \/>\n5. <strong>Put \u201csales calls\u201d and \u201ccold calling\u201d in your appointment book.\u00a0<\/strong>If\u00a0your iPhone or Droid or PDA doesn\u2019t have an hour blocked for outbound sales\u00a0efforts each day, you don&#8217;t have a shot. You\u2019re not going to ever \u201cget to\u00a0it\u201d or \u201csqueeze it in.\u201d You\u2019re busy. You\u2019ve got paperwork. You\u2019ve got\u00a0inbound phone traffic to handle. If you intend to make sales calls, put them\u00a0in your calendar. Otherwise, get out of sales.<br \/>\n6. <strong>Take risks.<\/strong> Playing it safe will ensure that you have a job\u00a0forever. Taking calculated risks will help you to earn a fortune. Put\u00a0yourself out there. Take your shot. Reach out and sell something!<br \/>\nTaking a little liberty, I opine that success is a journey, not a\u00a0destination.
