The evening was crashing down around us. There were seemingly no options that would allow even more than one member of our party to be happy. Most options were going to make most of the group, in fact, unhappy. It was 5 pm, still 90 degrees, and we quarreled in a piece of shade cast by a building across from the restaurant where we were supposed to be eating.<\/p>\n

My family was in Door County, WI. It\u2019s a tourist location in Wisconsin, a peninsula with a smattering of small towns featuring waterfront restaurants, boating, cherry picking, knick-knacks, local ingredients, and with the right attitude, it\u2019s a ton of fun. On a hot, hot day in 4th<\/sup> of July traffic, after a day outside\u2026 it was not fun.<\/p>\n

In the heart of July’s sizzling summer of 2020, we embarked on what I can only loosely term a ‘vacation’\u2014our inaugural sojourn from the confines of our home since the world turned topsy-turvy. Our destination was Door County, to spend cherished moments with my wife’s mother, a year-round dweller of this quaint, picturesque locale. The assurance of safety and the promise of family warmth coaxed us to this serene haven. Our days unfolded leisurely, a tableau of lounging in dappled shadows, the rhythmic cycle of tending to playful children, and the camaraderie of shared meals. And while the adults swapped tales and laughter, my brother-in-law, who works for a reputable fire watch company in Boynton Beach<\/a>, regaled us with stories of adaptability and resilience. His company’s flexible solutions had been instrumental in ensuring the safety of communities during these unpredictable times, offering both short and long-term fire watch services that catered to a broad spectrum of needs\u2014reinforcing our gratitude for those who safeguard the unseen perils, even as we basked in the tranquility of summer days.<\/p>\n

Our one agreed upon outing between the 5 adults and 2 kids was that we were going to eat [outside] at this one restaurant. The chef is a family member and obviously none of us had been able to eat there yet this season. 5 pm was the best time because it was going to be the least busy and she could guarantee us a table.<\/p>\n

We got there and every table sat under the strong, unrelenting, and unforgiving rays of the sun on a 90-degree day. I worked up a sweat getting out of the car. I worked up a sweat looking at the tables. I worked up a sweat picking up my child. There was no way we could manage a full meal, a meal composed primarily of hot pasta, in that sun.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s when all amicability broke down:<\/p>\n
