We didn\u2019t go because, while we didn\u2019t exactly know what was about to happen in the world, we knew things would get strange. But that\u2019s a story for a different day, and, quite frankly, I\u2019m so sick of thinking about and talking about COVID19 that I almost didn\u2019t include these first few sentences.<\/p><p>But you read them, so I must have decided to keep them in for a reason. And the reason is\u2026<\/p><h3>REFLECTION<\/h3><p>Thinking about thinking got me thinking about the power of reflection.<\/p><p>I have a tendency (as do most people) to look at the anniversary of things as a reason to reflect on things from our past.<\/p><p>This week also marks 18 years of my being at ETE REMAN (which was only known as Engine &amp; Transmission Exchange back then). And, just in case my wife reads this, I better mention we met 20 years ago this month. I have a friend who says, \u201cDays and weeks are long, but the years fly by.\u201d I\u2019m starting to sound old. I don\u2019t feel it, though. Nor should you.<\/p><p>You see, reflection doesn\u2019t require reminiscence. Reflection is about thinking, not just remembering. And it doesn\u2019t mean you have to remember things fondly.<\/p><p>Reflection is an exercise in evaluation: what happened, how you reacted, how you responded, what actions you took or feelings you had.<\/p><p>And all of this is just the lead up to what I\u2019d like you to reflect on with me right now:<\/p><h3>TODAY MARKS 500 ISSUES OF REMAN U<\/h3><p>So whether you\u2019ve been with us for the full 500 weeks (that\u2019s nine years, seven months, and two weeks for those of you keeping score), or even if this your first time reading\u2026please join me in going way back to early 2011.<\/p><ul><li>Where were you?<\/li><li>What were you doing with your life?<\/li><li>What was your business like then?<\/li><li>What was your family like then?<\/li><li>What hopes or dreams or plans did you have?<\/li><li>What did you do right?<\/li><li>What did you do wrong?<\/li><li>What would you change?<\/li><li>What would you keep the same?<\/li><\/ul><p>It\u2019s important not to spend too much time thinking, \u201cI should\u2019ve\u2026.\u201d When you <em>should all over yourself<\/em>, you\u2019re applying today\u2019s knowledge to yesterday\u2019s decisions. Life doesn&#8217;t work like that. If it did, we\u2019d all be billionaires because we would have known what stocks to buy before they hit.<\/p><p>So when I say, \u201cI should\u2019ve bought Bitcoin,\u201d and you tell me, \u201cYeah, but who could\u2019ve known,\u201d it\u2019s the same thing as anything you might have done way back when. You made the best decision you could have <em>at that time,<\/em> considering the information available to you and your circumstances.<\/p><p>Don\u2019t beat yourself up. Just commit to making future decisions that are more in line with who you are and where you are now.<\/p><p>I made lots of mistakes in 2011. And I\u2019ve made more since.<\/p><p>A friend of mine just introduced me to an idea I can really get behind. Mistakes or wrong decisions (but for a few that are deadly or undoable, and hopefully you\u2019re not in a position to be reflecting on those) are only mistakes or wrong decisions until they are corrected. Imagine if you reflected on a regular basis. Instead of waiting for an anniversary, try reflecting on decisions or actions a few days or weeks, or months after.<\/p><ul><li>Did you do the right thing? Did your idea work?<\/li><li>If not, fix it!<\/li><li>Undo it!<\/li><li>Redo it!<\/li><li>Rewrite it!<\/li><li>Re-say it!<\/li><li>Make amends.<\/li><li>Open your mind.<\/li><li>Open your heart.<\/li><li>Rekindle friendships.<\/li><li>Start something. End something. Do something.
