Let me break down some examples and share what I learned.<\/p><p>An acquaintance going through a career transition reached out to me to see if he could pick my brain. I quickly said yes, but unfortunately, I showed up unfocused and not present. I should\u2019ve said right away, \u201cCurrently, I\u2019m focusing my free time on a major project. Would you like me to send you a few resources that I really think could help? Or, I try to block off 8:00am every day for a phone call \u2026 Would that time work for you in a couple months?\u201d<\/p><p>Someone asked me to meet for coffee to tell me more about a network marketing business that they had started. I quickly said yes, but then I canceled late after I looked at my over-scheduled week. I should\u2019ve said right away, \u201cUnfortunately, I\u2019ve tried that business model in the past and I didn\u2019t enjoy it. Let me think about some people who might be interested.\u201d<\/p><p>A sales rep asked me if I\u2019d be interested in grabbing a quick lunch to network. I quickly said yes, and then I proceeded to put off the appointment. I should\u2019ve said right away, \u201cI\u2019m not the person who makes that buying decision. Would you like me to point you in the right direction?\u201d<\/p><p>A friend asked me to go to a sporting event during the work week. I quickly said yes, but then I canceled late the day before, so that I could spend time with my family. I should\u2019ve said right away, \u201cDuring the week, I try to block off nights to be with my family. Let me check my calendar to see if a different game might work.\u201d<\/p><p>You see, I\u2019m a people pleaser. While I thoroughly enjoy connecting with people and I want to spend time with everyone, this behavior really shoots me in the foot. Unfortunately, I\u2019m horrible at saying no and really good at half-way commitments \u2026 saying yes, and then no. I\u2019m a wimp at standing firm.<\/p><p>Saying \u201cNO\u201d is professional \u2026 you know best what to do with your time, and saying \u201cno\u201d to others is acceptable.<\/p><p>Saying \u201cYES, and then no\u201d is unprofessional \u2026 we need to be responsible and to honor our time commitments, and canceling at the last minute is unacceptable.<\/p><p>If you just said \u201cno\u201d to someone and feel awful, keep these things in mind\u2026<\/p><ul><li>Saying no is much easier than saying yes, and then no \u2014 this allows you to avoid late canceling.<\/li><li>Saying no helps you be a better leader \u2014 this allows you to focus on your direct reports.<\/li><li>Saying no is not mean and is not selfish \u2014 this allows you to be honest with others.<\/li><li>Saying no provides laser focus \u2014 this allows you to spend time on your key passions and priorities.<\/li><\/ul><p>Stand firm. Don\u2019t be a wimp. It\u2019s ok to say, \u201cno.\u201d It\u2019s ok to say, \u201clet me think about it.\u201d It\u2019s ok to ask for more information. It\u2019s ok to offer different options.<\/p><p><strong>ACTION: Before you commit to the needs of others, ask yourself a simple question, \u201cWill this time commitment take away from my most important priorities and goals right now?\u201d If the answer is yes, take the time to think about your answer before giving away one of your most valuable commodities \u2026 your time. <\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Think about the last time that you were asked to make a commitment that you really weren\u2019t interested in.
