There is a fine line between being alone and loneliness. The moment at night when both kids are in bed, the husband is at work and even the dogs are snoring is my ahhhh moment. The silence truly is golden, it allows for my \u201cme time \u201c and a chance to decompress, get my ducks in a row, and organize my to-do\u2019s. I am alone, but I am far from lonely. There have however been occasions that I have been in a room full of people, with conversations being had and interactions galore and yet felt that I was on my personal lonely desolate island.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

My mental health is as fine as it gets, I promise that there is a lesson here.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In our industry, or any customer facing industry for that matter, we battle with finding that sweet spot between giving our customers the space they need while making sure they don\u2019t feel abandoned.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Think back to a time that you had a less than stellar dining experience at a restaurant. You were seated, had a moment to figure out your drink order, and then sat. And sat. And sat some more. Finally the wait staff noticed there were people at their table and approached. The server was friendly, brought your drinks, took your order, returned to serve you and then disappeared. Drink glasses sit empty, ketchup nowhere in sight, and you have resorted to eating your soup with a fork. Your server abandoned you. You feel forgotten and rejected. You have not only received bad service, but lonely service. Compare this feeling to one where your server checks in to make sure the food is satisfactory. Glasses get refilled, and finished plates removed. The server leaves you alone to enjoy your meal, but ensures that your dining needs are met.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As service providers, it is our job to make sure that we give our customers the room to shop, peruse and decide, all while remaining accessible to answer questions or assist in finding a resolution.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

How do we find that optimal balance between being an extended warranty telemarketer and an apathetic cohort?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

  • Listen and Pay Attention: Actions may speak louder than words. Not all customers that need help will ask for it. Not everyone knows the difference between an all season and a snow tire, so be ready and willing to provide your expertise. Watch for cues of confusion or frustration when a customer is browsing. It is your job to offer help, not theirs to request it. <\/span>Some people are nicer than I. They will let you go through your whole sales pitch without actually hearing a word you have said. Look for disinterest, disengagement and signs of pending escape. The longer you stick around, the less chance they are going to buy. Watch for cues that they would rather be left alone to proceed with their shopping experience. They will seek you out when they need you. Give them space but be ready to spring into action.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    \u00a0<\/p>\n

    • Be Present: So they asked for help, now is your time to shine. Actually hear what the customer is asking. Make sure your responses answer the posed question. Let the customer feel that you are invested not just in making a sale, but in the overall sales experience.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      \u00a0<\/p>\n

        \n
      • Do Not Hover: Leave them alone. Obviously, this is after you have done your job. You have approached the customer. Answered any questions. Provided information necessary to decision making. You do not need to stand 6 inches away (not even 6 feet, preferably) and watch them turn on and off multiple display televisions. Invoke a mutual feeling of trust by letting them know you are close by and ready to help when they need you.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        \u00a0<\/p>\n

          \n
        • Don\u2019t Ghost: Don\u2019t make your customer feel lonely. Be engaged. Say \u201cHello\u201d. \u201cHow can I help?\u201d. Acknowledge that you have a customer that might need your assistance. Do not answer one question and be ready to bail. Customers can feel when you would rather be doing something else. That text message will be there when you are done. Your job is not done until the sale is made or the customer leaves. Follow up and follow through.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

          Customers can be needy. They either need your help right now (sometimes they don’t even know it yet), or they need you to leave them alone. Practice what I preach and you will find that your customers can embrace the alone time without feeling lonely.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

          With that, it’s time to go find a quiet closet with wi-fi.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
