{"id":861,"date":"2012-03-01T00:00:03","date_gmt":"2012-03-01T06:00:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/etereman.com\/remanu\/?p=861"},"modified":"2012-03-01T00:00:03","modified_gmt":"2012-03-01T06:00:03","slug":"compliance-or-commitment-part-one","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/etereman.com\/remanu\/2012\/03\/01\/compliance-or-commitment-part-one\/","title":{"rendered":"Compliance or Commitment: Which Do You Want On Your Team?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4><em>Part 1, An Employee Perspective<\/em><\/h4>\n<p>Earlier this week, I couldn\u2019t help but notice an air of sluggishness all around me\u2026<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>The lackadaisical grocery store cashier, checking her nails and staring off into space as the little old lady in front struggled with the credit card machine.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>The Jimmy Johns delivery driver, arriving 30 minutes late for a scheduled delivery without an apology.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>The DMV main desk staff, chatting about their bowling league and need for an afternoon soda with a line of a dozen people waiting to be helped.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Is it the winter weather? Maybe. The end of the Thanksgiving\/Christmas\/New Years\/Valentines Day \u201choliday high\u201d? Possibly.<br \/>\nThese few observations, all occurring in a work place, got me thinking. Of course, I wondered where their managers were. Did they know that poor customer service was happening right under their noses? Did they mind? More importantly, why did these employees seem not to care?\u00a0<strong>Where was the motivation??<\/strong><br \/>\nEnter, a friendly\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.twitter.com\/remanuniversity\">Twitter<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/etereman\">Facebook<\/a>\u00a0poll. We asked our fans and followers about which motivates them more, a coach or a manager, and why. Here are a few of the responses:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>\u201cCoach, because compliance will never take you where commitment will.\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>\u201cCoach for support, manager for decision making. Both are valuable, equally as circumstantial.\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>\u201cCoach, because that is what leading is all about- coaching for success.\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>What happened next? Can the same person be both? Usually not.<\/li>\n<li><strong>What\u2019s In It for Me?<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; Raises, promotions, extra vacation time. Employees want to perform, especially for a reward.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Different Strokes for Different Folks\u00a0&#8211;<\/strong>\u00a0The motivation style that works for each employee varies. The same approach for all won\u2019t guarantee the same result.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>At the end of the day, we couldn\u2019t help but feel like the employee perspective was only half of the story.
