Passion Never Fails

Paul Chen says, “Passion never fails.” This quote lives on the wall behind my desk, and I’m reminded every day of the pursuit of the extraordinary. It’s a simple but powerful message. It’s a truism easily agreed upon, but I hadn’t really thought about what it looks like – in action in the world and in my own life.
What differentiates passion from enthusiasm? From a bandwagon? How do you recognize passion in yourself? And if you find it lacking, how do you get it? For me, passion is that unstoppable inner force that drives me to achieve my goals and dreams. When you find yourself with a passion, celebrate, and then get to work:

  1. Get excited! This is your thing, your goal, your dream, your shining moment, your art. Whatever that may be, it needs to get you pumped to get out of bed in the morning to share it with the world. If it doesn’t, is it your passion?
  2. Find your niche. Having been blessed with no shortage of passionate people in my life, I find they always wish to spread their infectious energy toward my projects, career, and relationships. Whether in the form of a support group or mentor, you may get tired, lose focus, or need some feedback and that’s exactly what your network is for. Find people who are honest, also passionate, and aren’t afraid to get a little dirty when the going gets tough.
  3. Take care of yourself. I’ve met farmers, athletes, humanitarians, nurses, and UPS drivers who’ve all recognized they can’t give their best self to something if they haven’t been investing in their number one asset: themselves! Your passion is an inextricable part of you; it needs you, so take care.
  4. Feed your seeds. I want the best, most amazing, juicy pineapple. I’m not going to plant a corn kernel and expect to yield a tropical fruit. No matter how much energy I put into that kernel, a pineapple won’t be the result. The same thing applies to passion: identify those seeds that help you grow your project, your dream, and fuel them. My seeds are running, TED Talks, reading, and attending local networking events. My passion? Ever improving myself. And you know what? As long as I’m feeding the right seeds, I can’t fail.

The only thing I have to lose by taking to heart the advice of Paul Chen is a life of mediocrity and regret. And good riddance to that.
Passion is an unstoppable inner force that drives you to achieve whatever goal or dream you have. Maybe your definition is a little different and that’s fine. Whatever your personal definition, write it down. And since it won’t fail, because passion never fails, ride the wave and stay true to it and you.
This week’s article is the second of four in the Wisdom On Our Walls series. Based on some of the pretty cool Startup Vitamins posters that hang on our sales floor, near our builder benches, and in our cafeteria, our REMAN U writers will be sharing what these quotes mean to them – and how these words can impact your business.
