The coolness in the air, the feel of dried leaves curled beneath your toes, and the fog of breath dancing on the tip of your nose as you exhale can only mean one thing: muskie fishing.
Surprised? Me, too.
Just a few years ago, I probably would have answered with, “Pumpkin Spice Lattes!” But in 2010, what fall means to me all changed when I casted for my very first Muskie. Within 30 casts, I caught a fish that I’m told takes over 10,000 casts to catch. It was thrilling!
The story of my first Muskie is a good one, but I’ll save that fisherman’s tale for another time.
Since that first fish, I’ve been out several very cold fall mornings, casting and casting and casting. All casting and no catching? You’ve probably guessed it by now, but I’m not great at catching these monsters.
What brings me back year after year isn’t necessarily my love of being outside in the cold, but my love of the escape. Fishing takes me to a place where the stress of everyday life isn’t so stressful. That deadline I nearly missed isn’t top of mind, and my ever growing to do list melts away. What is top of mind is nothing – just the methodical motion of casting and reeling, talking and learning from my fellow anglers.
What’s my point?
Somewhere on the water, I’m able to have that moment of clarity. This is where my next big idea comes from. This is where I thought through this very article. It’s where I have the time to solve some of the bigger problems.
Can your business survive without your next big idea or solution to some of your daily issues? Can you afford to be so stifled in your work that you can’t see the forest through the trees? My best guess is no.
It might not be on the water, but what’s your escape? How do you get away in order to keep on keeping on? Share with me and maybe I’ll cast a new Reman U shirt your way.
