Forget Me Not.

We’ve all experienced a momentary lapse of memory at some point in our lives. Okay, maybe everyday. The eggs you needed to buy at the supermarket & didn’t, or the car you forget where you parked while inside. Worse yet, the business card of the biggest lead of your life misplaced under a stack of paperwork, or your slip of the mind to dial into that important conference call.
Getting frustrated? Get organized!
At ETE, we recently started using a new software program that inspired me. It’s an easy, web-based tool that allows our team to keep track of leads and conversations we have with our customers. Something we’ve never had before all in one place. I can set reminders to follow up with someone, or make a note to myself that Jack at Joe’s Transmissions prefers communication by email rather than fax.
I challenge you to get organizationally inspired with me.
1. Clean up that desk.
Put the pens away, dust off the computer monitor, and organize your paperwork! You may not realize how much the feel of your workspace affects you or your customers, even if they can’t see the space where you write their estimate. The extra care you take adds to their confidence in you as a business.
2. Get your contacts in order.
Become more efficient about the way you store your data. Sure, the classic Rolodex works great…but if you’re tech savvy in the least bit, begin to build your Outlook contacts or use your smartphone to scan & store business cards. The main goal here is not to lose that golden lead under a stack of bills.
3. Create a plan for your week.
While things change daily in your schedule, investing in a planner is a must. Prioritizing things in your work week that need to get done like finalizing payroll, or mailing the electric bill will free your mind for the daily sales or management role you play. My personal favorite is the digital calendar in Outlook where I can set reminders that show up both on my computer screen and my smartphone.
4. Take baby steps.
Lay out your to do list in a way that helps you get it done! Instead of writing “Create business plan for 2013” on your calendar, break it up into smaller chunks such as “Spend 30 minutes brainstorming for new marketing ideas for 2013,” or “Gather list of top customers from 2012.” Life can be overwhelming. Set yourself up for small successes that make the big picture happen.
Wow, that was tough. Did you fill up your trashcan while cleaning out your desk as well? Glad I’m not the only one! You haven’t started yet? Go back to step 1 and find a few things you could apply to your work life. I promise it’s a step you and your customers will be happy you took.
